What each system is for, which one owns which piece of data, and how your webshop and your marketplace accounts hang off the same chain.

In short
PIM answers what the product looks like, ERP how the company runs and WMS what happens in the warehouse, and they line up in one chain rather than competing.
The systems connect to the sales channels through an integration platform such as Base.com, and what breaks in practice is two owners for one field, not the software.
Start with an integration platform, add a PIM when translations and attributes for several markets stop fitting, an ERP when invoicing and multi-country VAT do, and a WMS when pickers walk further than they pack.
Sell on a webshop and two marketplaces at once and the same three questions keep coming back. Where is the current product description. How many units are really on the shelf. Why the price on one platform is not the price on the other.
Three systems answer those questions: PIM, ERP and WMS. This page sets out what each one owns, where the webshop and the marketplace accounts attach, and which of them you actually need at your stage.
The easiest way to remember it is through the question each of them answers:
They do not compete for the same job. They line up in a chain that runs from product information, through the company processes, to the parcel leaving the warehouse. The trouble starts when two of them hold the same field and neither one is the source of truth.
PIM is a central database where a product is described once and that data flows to all channels: the store, Allegro, Amazon, DACH marketplaces. Instead of correcting a description in five places, you correct it in one. For a multichannel seller, especially with translations for several markets, PIM is the foundation of consistency and a huge time-saver.
ERP ties business processes together: from order, through invoicing and settlements, to purchasing and planning. It holds the source of truth for finances and the flow of goods, in accounting and business terms. The bigger the company and the more channels, the more strongly ERP becomes the centre the other systems connect to.
WMS manages the physical warehouse: it knows where a given product is stored, guides staff through picking, tracks stock in real time and reduces errors in shipments. As volumes grow, it makes the difference between fast, error-free shipping and a bottleneck.
The systems on their own change little. What matters is how they connect to the sales channels, which usually happens through an integration platform: Base.com, still widely known by its old name Baselinker, on the Polish market, Channable or plentymarkets elsewhere in Europe.
A connected chain runs like this. The PIM feeds the product pages on every channel, orders from the marketplaces land in the ERP as documents, the WMS picks and ships them and sends the stock level back to all channels at once. You get one version of the data, no overselling and far less retyping.
Your own shop is one more channel on this chain rather than a separate world. The description that goes to Allegro or Amazon is the description your shop needs, and the stock figure has to reach all of them, or you sell the last unit twice.
In an integrated setup the shop takes product data from the PIM, sends its orders to the same ERP as the marketplaces, and reads stock from the WMS. The integration platform sits between the marketplaces and the rest of the chain, because marketplace interfaces change far more often than your ERP does.
What breaks in practice is almost never the software. It is two owners for one field: a price kept in the shop and in the ERP, or stock kept in a spreadsheet next to the WMS. Decide field by field which system owns the truth, and write it down, before you connect anything.
Names make the comparison easier than categories do:

at the start, an integration platform with product, order and stock modules carries you a long way, and costs a fraction of the rest,
once translations and attributes for several markets stop fitting in a spreadsheet, a dedicated PIM earns its keep,
once invoicing, purchasing and multi-country VAT stop fitting in the accounting software, a full ERP,
once pickers walk further than they pack, a WMS.
The trigger is a process that no longer fits, not a number of items. Buying all four at once is how companies end up paying for a PIM nobody fills in.
We map what you already run, name the owner of every field that matters, and connect the channels to it: marketplace integrations first, then product data in a PIM, then the links to your ERP and WMS. In most engagements the first month is spent on data rather than on software.
If you are choosing the integrator itself, our guide to setting up Base.com walks through the configuration step by step. Ask us to look at your current setup before you buy anything new.
